Last week, I posted a picture of the “civilized” side of this beautiful volcano. Therefore, I would also show a photo that depicts the agricultural aspect of Santa Maria Volcano, volcanoes in Guatemala in general.
Today the descendants of the Mayans populate the mountainous areas in Guatemala. After the arrival of the “Conquistadors”, they found refuge in the valleys and nowadays, they are making a good living by producing vegetables for the Guatemalan, El Salvadorian and Honduran market. They are experts in farming the steep mountainous slopes as you can see in this image. It is a lovely sight to see them working in their fields, which are usually covered in the clouds that rise up from the Pacific.
This photo was taken from the road that leads up to the “Fuentes Georginas” hot springs near Quetzaltenango. I went there a couple of times, always delaying the departure of the shuttle, to see the sunset and to take this photo.
I guess I did not make myself a lot of friends on those trips, but hey, sometimes a photographer needs to do what is necessary to get the shot.
